STORYBOX Canberra brings the creative knowledge of national institutions to the streets of the City Centre

The ANU School of Art & Design is excited to be part of the Storybox Canberra project to showcase art & design works submitted by academic researchers, students and emerging graduates from the Bachelor of Art & Design Degrees, alongside community engagement projects.

Our launch content includes vibrant short video and animation works created by students, emerging from active teaching and learning projects, research works by academics, a recording of ‘uncertain' Kinetic Sculpture from the New Alumni Exhibition, and selected images from an Instagram feed that accompanied Sharing Stories, an exhibition celebrating the achievements of the School of Art & Design’s innovative Balawan program and the artsACT supported SOA&D Sharing Stories Arts Exchange.

Preparing the content has been a collaborative, storytelling effort, drawing together curatorial and editing experience from School of Art & Design contributors and the Esem Team. We are currently working on forthcoming programme content that will include work showcasing interactive data graphics, video art physical computing & 3d printing.

Centred around a giant two-square-metre digital cube in Garema Place, and a series of digital plinths throughout the City West precinct, STORYBOX will invite Canberrans to reflect on different kinds of creative intelligence.

From Tuesday 12 July to Friday 30 September, the diverse and engaging program of content will be regularly updated from partners including the National Gallery of Australia, National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, Australian National University, Craft ACT, the National Museum of Australia and Canberra Museum and Gallery.

Featured content includes:

  • Historical footage of Canberra from the National Film and Sound Archive’s collection
  • Selections from the National Gallery of Australia’s Ceremony exhibition of works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Innovations such as data-driven interactive mood rings

Supported by digital placemaking studio Esem Projects, STORYBOX Canberra will bring interior worlds of learning, creativity and inspiration into the outside spaces of the City Centre through the theme of Inside/Out.

The digital cube and plinths will feature digital videos, photos, painting, drawing and building using a variety of materials, giving Canberrans a ‘behind closed doors’ insight into the creative development process or ‘flow’ of creators.
